i began performing around 1988, and my first CD was released in 1993… and by 1994, sound installation also became part of my practice.
one of the first installations was a 1994 collaboration with photographer/musician kevin mchugh. we collaborated on two installations early on, one at the brewery in downtown los angeles, and one at an abandoned area of the los angeles zoo. both exhibitions were put together by far (foundation for arts resources) and in the early 1990’s they provided a lot of opportunities for artists to collaborate, usually in abandoned spaces. other early works included “crop circles” at the malibu art ranch, recording the sound of my car driving, sounds recorded in joshua tree, etc.
all of this earliest work was created with cassettes or micro-cassettes, small speakers, and an 8-track multi-track recorder for mixing and layering. somewhere around that time i also entered the realm of the contact mic, which changed everything of course.
