transmissions was a body of work built around john glenn’s first transmission from space, and included paintings, drawings, sculpture and a large sound/sculpture installation. the original body of work was exhibited in a solo exhibition at the fresno metropolitan museum of art and science in fresno california in 2005, and curated by susanneh bieber.
later that year, the sound/sculpture installation – transmissions (voices of objects and skies) – was also included in the exhibition “in resonance” at the seattle center, and in 2007 it was part of the exhibition “kit bashing” at western bridge in seattle; and the piece part of their permanent collection.
all of the works used the text from john glenn’s 1960 transmission from space as a score, through various systems:
“I am in the middle of a mass of thousands of very small particles that are brilliantly lit up like they are luminescent. They are bright yellowish green, about the size and intensity of a firefly on a real dark night. I have never seen anything like it. They look like little stars. They swirl around the capsule and go in front of the window.”
