view (third version)

2002
headphones
field recordings
stereo sound composition

this was the third ‘view’ work that i created using field recordings based on what i could see from a window – and utilizing recordings of things recorded in the landscape as seen from the view of a window.

in this case, instead of making field recordings myself, i asked the curator, cassandra coblentz, to record sounds from the area that was visible from the gallery window. cassandra recorded 3 sections of sound: working from the closest point to the window to the farthest locations she could see from the window.

the final work consisted of a set of headphones lying near the window, so that a viewer/listener could see the original view and hear it transformed. this iteration of “view” was part of the exhibition “liminal spaces” at bard college, in annendale on hudson, new york.
