hanging garden

sound installation
2000
pasadena city college

the piece was created for the 2000 exhibition “inland specific” – bringing local artists to various sites across the san gabriel valley in california. i was offered a courtyard adjacent to the pasadena city college art gallery.

the piece was inspired by the emptiness of the space, and the pre-existing 8 hooks attached to the curved brick wall. the soundwork was created using the sounds of a microphone touching houseplants. there are 8 tracks of sound – one for each speaker hanging from a found hook on the wall. the idea was simply to allow sound to give the space the presence of a garden.
