cosmic dancer was inspired by two things: a stack of microscopic photographs from the 1930’s, and a radio interview with marc bolan (of t-rex), introducing the song “cosmic dancer”, by saying “this is a song about reincarnation”.
because the photographs fell into several different visual “themes”, i shot still frames of each image group towards the creation of a motion sequence (basically a flickering movement of 15-30 images).
the soundtrack was created by manipulating the first note of several different versions/recordings of the song (all recorded by bolan and t-rex) – with each sound piece specifically created for each image sequnce.
the film was premiered at the orange county museum of art as past of the “one wall” series in 2001.
