celia thaxter’s garden was inspired by a description of thaxter’s garden in relation to areas of color. i was interested in how a written description could evoke a sculptural object… and all of my decisions were based on text, rather than actually seeing the space described. in the early 1990’s i discovered the work of richard tuttle, which gave me a kind of confidence in creating such a minimal object. while i was already a fan of judd’s work and sol lewitt, tuttle’s work felt more human, and similarly more akin to the way i always made things that were far from perfect.
