the “another, another green world” sculptures were made with eyes closed, listening to different pieces of music from brian eno’s LP “another green world”, which i received as a gift when i was in grammar school. because “another green world” was one of the first things i heard that made me think about sound abstractly, i decided to use the recording to generate abstract forms. i had been making blind listening drawings for years, and wanted to see how the process might also generate sculptural forms. thus, i listened to each track on eno’s record, allowing the sounds to determine the movements of my hands and fingers in relation to what i was hearing. each sculpture was formed during a single play of each track.
there are ceramic 14 sculptures – one for each track on the LP. the six shades of green glaze are based on a system of grouping ‘songs’ (and sculpture sessions) by rounding up or down their lengths to the nearest half minute – the shortest tracks featuring two shades of green, and the longest featuring 7 shades of green. these time based groupings also determined the height of each base.
the ceramics were made during a residency at the pomona college museum of art.
the clustered image is from the pomona college museum of art exhibition, steve roden: the another silent green world. the linear installation on a shelf was from an exhibition at the laura reynolds gallery in austin texas.
