in 2008, i was invited to create a site specific performance for thomas u. walter’s girard college building in philadelphia (it was the most expensive building built in the united states, at the time). the building had not been open to the public in over 100 years, and i chose it as my site for an exhibition as part of “hidden city” a philadelphia city-wide exhibition with artworks created for historical sites. a year before the installation, i was invited to create a performance for the empty space. the performance included improvised sound, sound installation, live video, and a short one minute film that was looped for the evening. the one minute film – and nothing disturbed the silence – was created via stop motion animation, and the imagery converses with stephen girard’s wish was that the facade of the building would not contain any ornament.
