and it emits a music… was one of the larger early works, at 24″ x 48″, painted on two wood panels with some wood added to the surface. the text is most likely from rilke, but i honestly don’t remember where it came from. at the time i was using quotes on the paintings to somehow offer suggestions to the abstract imagery, to create a bit of tension between the words and the abstract painting. i also felt that the text suggested that if one spent enough time with the painting they might be able to “hear” some sound emanating from it… this work is pretty indicative of what i was doing in grad school. it’s an important artifact of the early stages of my practice, as i destroyed all of the works from my graduate show.
