three chinatown landscapes

sound installation
inmo gallery
chinatown, los angeles

the sound clip is an excerpt

i placed one large speaker on a table in the window of the inmo gallery in the pedestrian area of chinatown, in downtown los angeles. the sound was composed using 3 objects purchased at chinatown giftshops as source material: a wooden toy flute, a small aluminum wind chime, and a small paper accordion. each track used one of these objects as the only source. the installation was installed in front of a large picture window facing the chinatown pedestrian area, and the idea was that people walking along outside would enter the gallery and experience an alternative to the piped in chinese muzak. the pieces were eventually released on the sonoris label in france as a cd entitled: three roots carved to look like stones.
