some stereo paths (eyes closed listening) was created for the exhibition freewall at the cal poly pomona art gallery. the work was created directly on the wall in a corner space and is a site specific hybrid of two bodies of work i have been working with over the past 10 years.

the first aspect of the work is a site specific soundscape created from field recordings of the gallery space as well as the surrounding area. i dragged a microphone around the outside perimeter of the gallery building as well as the inside perimeter of the gallery, recording myself tapping on metal railings, stepping on grass, carpet, pathways, as well as recording sounds emanating from inside vents and outside machinery droning away outside of the space.

the resulting recordings were transformed through electronic manipulation, and the resulting soundscape played continuously in the space.

after the soundscape was completed, i listened to the soundscape on headphones while making marks on the wall with my eyes closed… allowing what i was hearing (rather than what i was seeing) to determine the movements of my hands, and thus, the drawings on the wall were wrought from the sounds around me.

the final installation consisted of both the drawings on the walls and the sounds – offering a conversation between the two mediums.
