usonian poem 2004

exhibition: barnsdall art park, los angeles, ca april 2004

usonian poem was created for the pleasure garden event at the barnsdall art park in los angeles. the park surrounds and connects the municipal art gallery and the frank lloyd wright designed hollyhock house, designed for aline barnsdall. the sound work was created using a small acorn like pod that fell on my head while visiting a frank lloyd wright house in kobe japan. when the pod hit me in the head i put it in my jacket pocket, where it lived for about a year and a half. given the opportunity to present an installation at the foot of the hollyhock house, i decided to bring frank lloyd wright's movement between japan and america, both physically and inspirationally, together. i used the pod from japan to generate a sound work by processing acoustic recordings of the pod being dropped on my lap steel guitar.
