the silent world, 2002-2003

the silent world paintings are all visual translations of the phrase: the silent world (the title of jacques cousteau's first book). the first series of paintings were shown at the santa barbara contemporary arts forum in may of 2002, and created using a system of equivalents for measured lines and the alphabet - basically the letter a= a 1 inch line, b=2 inch, c =3 inch, etc.
the images on this page were begun in june of 2002. in these new works, i am still using measuring systems based on the alphabet, but the systems have become more idiosycratic, such as a=a 1" line, or a= 1 notch, or a= 1 colored box, or a = a specific color, etc... and in some cases change from letter to letter or word to word.
