speak no more about the leaves, 2003

pomona college museum of art, pomona, california

the audio work speak no more about the leaves, was created for the facade of the museum at the pomona college museum of art. it uses the vowel structure from the text of a poem by stefan george as a score for striking 5 tones on a small chime Ð the composition of the different tones predetermined by the vowel structure of the following poem, which was used by schoenberg for on of his poems from the hanging garden songs:

speak no more about the leaves
thieved by the wind
nor about ripebursting quinces
nor the tread of winter's vandals down the year
nor the trembling of the dragonflies when rain falls
nor the candles flickering in the fickle air.

the final work uses only the resonant decay of the chime placed forwards and backwards against each other mimicking the form of a small hill. the work was playing continuously 24 hours a day for 6 weeks.
