moonfield, 2002
exhibition: resonanzen II, stadt galerie, saarbrucken, germany, 2002, curated by bernd shulz

moon field was an extension of a work called
the moon gatherers that i had shown earlier this year at the armory center for the arts in los angeles, and gallery e/static in torino. all of the works were initially inspired by a work by joseph cornell consisting of a bottle with a photo of the moon inside. for the earlier works i used the sounds of glass bottles - for this one i got a little closer to the moon with the sound of yuri gagarin's first transmission from space as my only sound source. for moon field i used 100 glass bottles with a small loudspeaker placed within each one. the abstract soundscape created with gagarin's voice was playing quietly in the space, filling it with a presence not unlike insects, distant birds, or small motors. my interest was to create a space as evocative and contemplative as a small garden or pond. the work also took into consideration the 5 large windows in the stadt galerie space using only the natural light to light the work - allowing the shifts in light and shadow to accompany the constantly shifting 8 channel 100 speaker audio work. moonfield is now in the permanent collection of the san diego museum of contemporary art. to see an of the installation there, click here.
